History of the Penny Rug

Penny rugs are a traditional American Folk Art dating back to the 1800's. Women would use scraps of wool from old clothing, blankets and hats to create their designs. Coins were used as templates for the circles-giving them the name "Penny Rugs." Each circle was hand sewn using the blanket stitch. Many times a coin was stitched underneath so the piece would lay flat. The rugs were backed with wool, burlap or feedsacks. The early Penny Rugs were rarely created for the floor, but most often used to decorate tables, beds and hearths. Some were even used as wall hangings.
