History of the Penny Rug

Penny Rugs are a traditional American Folk Art dating back to the 1800's.  Women would use scraps of wool from old clothing and blankets to create their designs.  Coins and coin shapes were used as templates for the circles-giving them the name "Penny Rugs."  Each circle was hand sewn using the blanket stitch.  Some of the rugs were embellished with a variety of stitches and appliqued designs. Many of the rugs had patterns of houses, florals, animals, people, and festive scenes. Each one telling it's own story.  Wool, burlap or feed sacks were used for backings.  The early Penny Rugs were rarely created for the floor, but most often used to decorate tables, beds and hearths.

This mat measures 10 3/4 x 18 3/4 inches.  As I researched Holly & Ivy, I discovered the meaning and the story of many traditions have changed over the years, but the traditions themselves continue.   To Christians, the prickly leaves and red berries of the Holly symbolize the crown of thorns and blood of Christ.  Ivy has to cling to something for support as it grows.  It's Christian meaning reminds us that we need to cling to God for support.   In their struggle to make it through the winter, our early ancestors brought evergreens into their homes.  The evergreen leaves of these two plants were to represent the hope that spring would return.  The colors of holly & ivy, green and red are the two colors that are most traditionally associated with the Christmas Season.  Bringing Christian meaning to light, I created this particular Holiday mat to remind us of our Hope for today and tomorrow.

"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.  I do not give to you as the world gives.  Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."  John 14:27
